Dressing Down a Pencil Skirt

May 30, 2012

I work in an office with a dress code that’s, well, kind of hard to describe. Some people wear jeans and t-shirts every day while others wear skirts and suits. Personally, I prefer to fall somewhere in between. I figure it’s safest that way. And while I love a good pencil skirt, I feel overly dressed if I put something like a button down or blouse on top. So I came up with some outfits that I think dress down a pencil skirt pretty effectively. Of course, the color of this pencil skirt helps to keep it from looking to formal, too.

What’s the dress code where you work? What ways would you dress down a pencil skirt?

This is really helpful to me. Because I work at a University we have a mix of dress types as well. The student workers are always in jeans and sometimes t-shirts. The classified staff is usually wearing slacks and sometimes even a skirt. Because I’ve transitioned from student worker to classified over the past few months, I feel a little awkward in what I should wear. Sometimes I wear a skirt and people ask me why I’m so dressed up. I’d like to wear summer skirts but still feel casual so these are great ideas that I can use.

I know exactly how you feel! I’m glad you liked the outfits.
