My addiction has a home: Becoming a coffee shop regular

September 20, 2011

Since moving to Salt Lake last year my coffee intake has increased. Dramatically. I’ve always liked coffee and drank it fairly regularly, but the last 15 months have really taken it to a new level. I’ve mentioned the drive-up coffee hut I used to live by, which was instrumental in my increased consumption. However, since I moved I’ve had to find a new place to stop on the way to work to pay for the coffee that my husband wishes I would make at home. Along my surface-street commute are more coffee joints than I can count on two hands. And I’ve tried most of them. But it didn’t take me long to find my favorite: Red Eye Express Coffee House.

I drove past this little gem several times before finally deciding to drop in. On my first stop I came inside (mostly because I wasn’t entirely sure where the drive-thru was) and was completely charmed by the cozy-yet-urban, vintage-inspired decor. I was then charmed the owners.

That's Oscar (who tried to sneak out of the picture) and Linda in the background

You know the uber-bubbly baristas you find at some chain coffee places? The kind that make you go “SOMEone’s had plenty of coffee today”? You won’t find them here. Instead, you’re likely to see Dave (Oscar) or Linda (I’m pretty sure they both sleep here) working the counter and grinning warmly in a way that would make even the shyest coffee drinker feel free to ask the difference between a latte and an Americano. These are just real people who love coffee and really enjoy making friends with their customers.

After coming here for a while, the owners started to recognize me. Once they started reaching for the cup before I had even ordered, I started to feel like a regular. But it was the day I walked in and Oscar used the applause setting on his noise maker that I knew I was a regular. It was an exciting day for me. I now have a coffee shop to call my own. But I’m willing to share.

Cup o Joe and my treasured punch card

As you may know, my favorite coffee house drink is a vanilla latte. Before I felt comfortable bragging about a coffee shop to everyone who would listen, I figured I should try their regular drip coffee offerings, too. To make sure they aren’t a one-trick pony, as it were. As I expected, even their good ole fashioned coffee is excellent. So I feel totally confident urging everyone I know to stop by Red Eye just south of Fort Union Blvd on 9th East. Check this place out, say “hey” to Oscar and Linda. I promise, you won’t be disappointed.
