Outfit Post: Adding flair to simple summer looks

June 19, 2012

I love summer. I hate being cold so, by default, I love summer. However, when the tempuratures start to creep up towards 100 degrees, it gets harder and harder to wear anything more than the absolute bare minimum to get by. In fall, when I feel like my outfits a bit on the simpe (boring) side, it’s easy to throw on a jacket or a scarf or both to add some interest to the outfit. But in summer, when staying cool is the number one priority, I try to find ways to accessorize to jazz up an outfit. Adding some bracelets or a necklace keep things intersting without adding bulk or layers.

Now, I don’t normally wear quite this many accessories. But adding anything from a bright lip or ombre nail polish to bright belts or piles of bracelets keep me from feeling the outfit blahs. Personally, I like at least two points of interest, or (to steal a phrase from one of my favorite movies) “pieces of flair,” to take a simple outfit up a notch.

What’s your favorite way to keep it interesting with your summer wardrobe?

Trend I Love: The Spring 2012 Bare Midriff

June 18, 2012

One of my favorite trends sprinkled in the Spring 2012 RTW fashion shows is the bare midriff. Honestly, I’m a bit surprised at how much I like it. I was in high school at the height of Britney, so the exposed midriff got pretty played out.

I think what brought me around to the bare midriffs of Spring 2012 was the way they were styled. Instead of pairing the midriff tops with low-waisted bottoms, exposing the maximum amount of stomach possible, this year’s look is much more demure and subtley sexy, showing either a sliver of skin or just a section of the ribcage. It feels like a much more wearable option.

Though I don’t know if I’ll be sporting the look anytime soon, simply because I’m just not that brave yet, I love the way it looks and the summer vibe it brings.

What do you think of the midriff? Love it or hate it?

Outfit Post: Good Day Utah beauty segment

June 12, 2012

I admit, the first time I went on Good Day Utah, I bought a new outfit. It was just so easy to justify it. But this time, I just couldn’t spend the cash. So I just took to my own closet this time. I figured a colorful top was nice and summery enough, mixed with some gold jewelry. That’s what I love about a light blouse. It’s good for so many occasions.

Fox 13 Summer Beauty Trends Segment

June 11, 2012

Good Day Utah on Fox 13 was nice enough to have me back on over the weekend to talk about summer beauty trends. You can watch the segment here. I worked with the lovely Charlotte of Headstrong Makeup once again to come up with four on-trend and wearable makeup looks, taking inspiration from the Spring/Summer 2012 fashion shows. For a full breakdown of each look, check out Headstrong Makeup.

While the segment only allowed time to talk about makeup trends, I also wanted to go over the hair and nail trends I included.

Red is wearing the near-ubiquitous top knot to go along with her natural, sporty makeup look. There’s certainly nothing new about this trend, but it’s still popular because it gives that great effortless-yet-sexy look while keeping hair off the neck during the hot temps. On her nails, I picked up some Neon nail polish from American Apparel. I’ve mentioned (over and over again) how much I love using the neon trend in accessories, and this is just one more way to do it.

To go along with Emily’s colorful eye makeup, I just straightened and texturized her hair to give it a modern look. I think this helps keep the colorful makeup from looking 80’s. On her nails, she’s got a very neutral mocha color. I’ve been seeing more and more of the “mannequin nail” look and I think it also helps to balance out the bright eyes.

Hilary sported two fun trends this season, the cat eye and the bright lip. She already had the most amazing textured hair, so I just curled a few pieces with the flat iron, ran some shine serum through it and loosely pinned the two front sections back. I love the look of beachy waves, especially paired with more “done up” makeup.

Finally, Rene really rocked the smokey eye look, but in a much more wearable way than was seen on runways. And because I’m a complete sucker for braids, I had her hair put in to a loose, side fishtail braid. It’s been said a million times before, but don’t stress if your hair doesn’t stay braided. Undone is the new done. She’s also wearing fun ombre nail polish in pink hues. I thought the romantic hair style and feminine nails were a nice juxtaposition to the super-smoldering look of her eye makeup.

What’s your favorite beauty trend of the season? Least favorite?

Outfit Post: The recurring neon belt

June 7, 2012

Are you sick of seeing this belt yet? I don’t blame you if you are. I’m not going to quit wearing it, either, I just don’t blame you. There’s just something about a pop of neon that makes an average outfit a bit more interesting. I’ve clearly been getting my money’s worth out of this skinny belt. Exhibits A, B and C. And I don’t see an end anytime soon.
